Infodemic
Team Republic's submission to GameUp Africa's Jam for Democracy 2024.
We're the ones who spread misinformation, so why don't we go back and reflect on our part in sharing what we now know to be false? I have tweeted, liked, retweeted posted and helped spread things that sometimes i did not even get a chance to realize was wrong. When we realize our little contributions, we train ourselves to be critical and cautious of information we receive. Most importantly, the ones we help spread, even if by just a little bit. These things can topple democracies, and make our freedoms very difficult to re-achieve. This corporate-research-social-media-epidemiological excuse of a game is a time machine (not too far back, we're not paying Robespierre and Napoleon a visit yet. Although that would make for a great example of how dictators take advantage of... geez louise look at how long this bracket is getting).
Made by one human, six cans of monster energy, 2 all-nighters and 1 bout of malaria.
Code, Music and Sound are composed by myself. Use of emojis are not only artistic (if that's possible), the entire project is highly optimized for accessibility in an educative campaign. The game runs on (Mobile) every device with a browser and loads faster that 99% of web pages that exist today(I'm looking at you React).
The faintly visible background image used in my pitch slide and game was generated by ChatGPT's Dall-E, image name is "infodemic-background.png" in the Github project source linked.
There was also an attempt to use ChatGPT to create a list of trends after the first 30 i made (it was tedious), but it decided to add disinformation of its own as well, so i had to continue manually and duplicate what i had to keep the game running long enough. Maybe it's the free version i use, someone with the $200 monthly subscription of ChatGPT would have had a field day. Anyway, the point is i added to a Gameplay idea that misinformation can come from misplaced trust in software like these too. I'm not going to to mention the things i didn't finish, because you can see it in my code ;-) I cancelled a dying minute sprint to make it also work as an offline PWA since there's only less than 400KB of assets to store. Had to cut out storylines and interactions so i could submit today. Will be back to make an entire messaging system after some rest. Thanks for this experience, goodnight. And oh, did i say this was my first Game Jam?
